Why Is My Furnace Making THIS Noise?

Furnace flames

Are you starting to worry after hearing your furnace making a strange noise in your Clinton Township home?

After all, nobody wants to deal with a broken furnace—especially since it likely uses more energy and costs you more money than any other system you rely on in your Michigan home. In fact, your furnace could be responsible for up to 42 percent of your utility expenses, according to the US Department of Energy (DOE).

While an unusual noise could indicate there’s a problem with your furnace, it’s important to know it does not always mean you need a replacement. Instead of trying to figure out what’s going on with your furnace on your own, reach out to our Great Dane Heating and Air Conditioning professionals who can determine the severity of the issue and resolve it for you.

In the meantime, you can get an idea of what may be wrong with your furnace if it’s making one of these noises:

Whistling

If you hear a whistling noise coming from your furnace, there could be a loose connection or hole in your ducts causing air to escape. If you aren’t sure how to safely tighten the loose areas in your ducts, discover it’s too far out of reach, or find duct leaks, go ahead and reach out to one of our Great Dane furnace experts who can take care of it for you.

Screeching or Rattling

Your furnace could have a broken blower wheel if it’s making a screeching or rattling sound. It could also sound like metal scraping against metal, and, unfortunately, this situation will only get worse and more costly if it’s not addressed as soon as possible.

When you hear this noise, turn off your furnace immediately and call our Great Dane heating and cooling specialists who can inspect the damaged blower wheel and take care of it accordingly.

Thumping or Vibrating

A thump, vibration, or noise similar to the pounding of a washing machine could mean you have a blower wheel out of alignment. You should have the blower wheel evaluated and corrected before the problem becomes more severe.

Humming

When you hear a humming noise coming from your furnace, it is usually due to the blower motor, which may not be lubricated enough. If this is not the case, the noise could also be due to loose ducts or equipment, or it might be due to a problem with an electrical component.

Since a humming sound could indicate a few different issues, it’s helpful to have a Great Dane professional examine your furnace and determine the true cause of the sound to properly address it.

Loud Banging

The loud banging noise you hear your furnace making could be due to a dirty furnace burner. This is most likely the case if you hear the noise coming from your heater and notice it takes a minute for your furnace to start.

A collection of dirt on your furnace burners can prevent ignition. Gas builds up and causes the banging noise. Unfortunately, this is another issue you should not ignore because it could damage your heat exchanger and lead to a costly repair.
